National Children's Week & Ways to Welcome

25 Oct 2018 by Rachael Bouley

It’s National Children’s Week, and with so many kids participating in our programs and playing at our clubs, we should do our part to promote child safety and wellbeing. The Department of Health and Human Services has released a new children’s poster designed to engage directly with young kids. We recommend clubs display these posters, which encourage children to speak up if they feel unsafe. The poster, along with resources regarding the Child Safe Standards Compliance Monitoring Framework 2018-2019, can be downloaded from the department’s website: https://providers.dhhs.vic.gov.au/child-safe-standards

We appreciate your participation as we all do our part to advocate for safe and positive sporting experiences for people of all ages, especially our young players and spectators!

In addition, it’s important to keep in mind that everyone deserves a warm welcome at our competitions and clubs. The ‘Ways to Welcome’ Diverse Safe Place Project, funded by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), aims to promote access and inclusion to community services for culturally diverse people living with a disability. This includes opportunities to participate in sports such as baseball. A new ‘Ways to Welcome’ website recently launched, and it offers tools and resources that will assist organisations and clubs with improving their efforts to welcome those with disabilities and invite them to join in our beloved game.
